Common Misconceptions about Ear Wax and Microsuction: Debunking Myths

While ear wax serves a protective purpose, excessive build up of ear wax can lead to discomfort, dizziness, itchiness, pain and hearing problems. Microsuction is a efficient method commonly used to remove excess ear wax. However, there are several misconceptions surrounding ear wax and microsuction that can cause confusion. In this blog post, we aim to debunk some of the common misconceptions and provide accurate information about ear wax and microsuction.

What is Ear Wax?

Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by the glands in our ear canals.

Is ear wax unhygienic?

Contrary to popular belief, ear wax is not a sign of poor hygiene. It plays a vital role in protecting the ear canal by trapping dust, debris, and bacteria. In most cases, the ears are self-cleaning, and the excess wax naturally migrates out of the ear.

However, some people produce an excessive build up, causing temporary hearing loss, trapped water, dizziness and discomfort. It is recommended that those with excessive build up should have their ear wax removed by microsuction.

Are cotton swabs are an efficient tool for removing ear wax?

Inserting cotton swabs or any other small objects into the ear canal is highly discouraged. It can push the wax deeper into the ear, potentially causing impaction or damage to the ear canal. We have seen cases where the ear canal and ear drum are red, scratched and bleeding – this poses a high risk of ear infection.

Additionally, cotton swabs can lead to injury if not used carefully. Microsuction ear wax removal, performed by trained professionals, is a more efficient method for removing ear wax.

At the Ear Cleaning Clinic, our registered nurses have completed thorough practical and theoretical training specifically for this procedure. Our RN’s suction ears all day every day – they’re the experts!

Is microsuction a painful procedure?

Microsuction is generally a comfortable procedure. Our professional registered nurses use a suction device made specifically for ears to gently remove the excess wax without causing discomfort. The only time where it may be painful is if your ears are already sore with an infection – we usually require for you to use antibiotic or medicated drops for a few days prior to microsuction to eliminate the inflammation and pain.

In summary patients may experience slight pressure or mild sensations during the ear wax removal procedure, but it should not be painful.

Can microsuction cause hearing loss?

Microsuction, when performed by a qualified professional, does not cause hearing loss. In fact, it can improve hearing by removing the blockage caused by excessive ear wax.

Some people may be sensitive to noise, in this case our Ear Nurses can turn the suction down, or use curettage techniques to remove the wax (hooks and forceps).

It is essential to seek professional help for ear wax removal, as improper techniques or attempts to remove wax at home can potentially lead to hearing problems or damage to the ear.

Is microsuction only for severe ear wax blockages?

No. Microsuction can be used for both mild and severe cases of ear wax build up. It is also helpful in helping to clear up outer ear infections faster. Microsuction also removes dead skin and foreign objects from the ears.

Even if you don’t experience significant symptoms, it’s important to have your ears checked regularly to ensure optimal ear health – your hearing may have decreased over time due to wax without you noticing, having the ear wax removed often makes a huge difference in quality of life.

People who wear hearing aids or in-ear devices such as airpods, ear plugs daily usually require microsuction once or twice per year minimum. However, our nurses will recommend a time frame suitable for you based on your individual situation.

Once ear wax is removed, will it come back?

Ear wax is a natural substance that the body produces to protect the ear canal. Even after microsuction, your body will continue to produce ear wax. However, regular ear hygiene practices, avoiding excessive ear cleaning and keeping the ears dry can help prevent excessive build up and the need for frequent removal.
